» Start-up of the AD experimental plant at the Industrial Engineering School of the Extremadura University in Badajoz: It is the beginning of an R&D&I project for the treatment and valorization of liquid and solid slaughterhouse waste in a full-scale plant. The plant simulates a two-phase anaerobic digestion reactor, taking advantage of the biogas in completely mixed and discontinuous reactors by re-compression of the biogas. The aim is to evaluate the treatment efficiency of the system and to extrapolate the results to the territory of Extremadura, accounting for the existence of a network of slaughterhouses and meat processing plants, and the valorization and utilization of the subproducts from the AD process.
These are:
• biogas as an alternative energy source.
• solids for quality compost.
• liquids with different nutrient concentrations for energy crops.
» In Aragon, the first “Manure Management Centres” have been launched. The design of three of these centres is being finalized, one for each province (Huesca, Zaragoza and Teruel), with the involvement of private initiative, some ADS and livestock farmers, and the possibility for town and city councils to participate. In the first phase, the aim is to treat the liquid manure to the most adequate level for each zone, in the second phase to compost the solids, and in the third phase to achieve anaerobic digestion and biogas utilization. The solids will be composted together with residues from pruning and cleaning up of lower regions.
» In Castilla-León: the livestock farm “Bascones del Agua” near Lerma (Burgos) is being analyzed for the design of an ambitious project that will valorize the slurry and manure of 50.000 pig heads and 1400 milking cows.
» In Catalonia, three plants are the initiative of different municipalities in the regions of Osona and El Vallés Oriental, each one with a design that is based on local needs and accounts for all the local manure surpluses. The projects are developed in phases: initially they focus on the reduction of nitrogen surpluses in vulnerable zones, and in later stage the viability to expand the plants via aerobic digestion with biogas utilization is considered.
» In the USA, mobile units are in the construction phase. They are transportable on trucks or 24 Tm tractors, and can be used for the treatment of abandoned lagoons and for continuous treatment of small livestock farms
